| A Periodical Review | ||
| Last week on my now almost routine day off, I trod to the BX to find something to blow my millions on. I review the magazines on the shelf, Guns-R-us, Fast Cars Fast Women, Ugly Men with Dead Animals all the magazines that appeal those that are here. Except me. I found one that was rather out of place. The wet white shirt was on target, however it just happened to be revealing the chest of Rob Lowe. Given that this magazine would not appeal to the demographic that reads the aforementioned, I picked it up. It first glance it seems to blend in with the GQ and Esquire family. So I bought it hopping to fill my GQ fix for the month. The past issues aren't doing it for me any more. |

As I looked through the pages it
seemed like it would be a good read. There was an article on Billy Bush, I
assumed that this was a new nick-name for Dubya. Also I found that the
little hottie from Married...With Children, Christina Applegate was
in in here, an article about insomnia, and... houseboys. This threw me
off. I shared my new discovery with my friends that I share my day off with.
They were disgusted. They were scared. I wasn't. I then decided to read this
magazine in its entirety and share with you my findings. A Periodical
Review.
DETAILS sat on my floor in my room for about four days before I remembered to bring it in to work. Through out the week I kept getting questions about the houseboys followed by laughter. I finally brought it in and I decided that I would just start at the beginning and read on. I started with the Letter from the Editor, the when on to the Letters to the Editor (I never read these). Then I moved on to what seemed to be the regular departments. The first section I came across was KNOW+TELL, followed by dossier, and then the featured articles to fill the rest of the pages. KNOW+TELL had some interesting things to offer. Insight into anthropology, style, drinks, Goods, Sounds, Words, a list of books, and finally Designer. The Goods section gave me a list of five things I must own. All items together totaled $20,586. We move on to drinks where we are learning to build the perfect home bar. I was excited because in this issue we focus on Gin, my poison when I indulge. Although DETAILS quickly lost points when the didn't even mention Bombay Sapphire in their list of nine that they would recommend. When Gordon's makes the list, a $13 bottle of Gin, and Bombay is left in the dark, I begin to wonder if this originated form someone in there freshman year in college that still sipping on wine coolers. They did have some recommendations that I haven't tried that I will whenever I get out of dry county. Style gave us a look into the history of Vans, a brand of shoe popular among the skateboarding populous. Sounds gives us two lists of ten albums. I confused by why it wasn't just a list of twenty. Finally our Designer of the month is Michael Kors. He shares in insight on what is sexy. I could only relate to half of what he was talking about, especially the part about a tan. We then turn to dossier. I had to google this word to see what it meant. Page after page we can find info on Work, Real Estate, Careers, Drugs, Music, Relationships, and Sleep. The feature article was on Billy Bush, whom apparently is Dubya's cousin. He works for NBC on Hollywood Insider or something like that. Our look into Work didn't really have anything to do with work. No tips on how to handle a crazy boss, or when an office relationship goes sour, nothing of this nature. Instead we look into bathroom etiquette... when "you need to evacuate your colon" to quote Mr. Burroughs who was so thoughtful to give us insight on this matter. In Real Estate we face together with apartment buyers the hassle of trying to find a decent apartment for, (long pause) a million dollars. This just got under my skin. These poor babies, someone send them some money will ya, Angelo can't spring the extra .3 mil to get the apartment with the skylight. Music brings us to meet Lenny Kravitz. I enjoyed this piece, as a fan of Lenny Kravitz it was nice to look into his personal and spiritual life that he was willing to share with us. The Careers essay brings us a closer look at a poor job market and what Bush&Co. are doing about it. Actually it was more like "The Secret Lives of Houseboys- And The Men who Keep them". We look into the lives of a few young men who felt the need to seek lucrative employment outside the norm. This kind of made me think about life after the military which is approaching soon, I really hope the job market gets better. Once I begin to read this article, something is adding up in my head. The ad's, The language used in the articles. I start to get the feeling that the editor wasn't thinking metrosexual.

After finishing the dossiers off I have
gone through two thirds of the magazine. I notice some nice things about
DETAILS, the fact that I don't have to flip to the back of the magazine to
finish an article. I flip through the book to make sure I wasn't speaking to
soon. It was true. Not a one. I was astonished, I thought how nice this is.
I then noticed that there was a good reason that all of the articles were
really short.
I then pressed on to read a story about a Captain in the Marines that was about to come over to my neck of the woods. I started to get board with the magazine and I started flipping around to she what else I was in store for. I read the half page on Christina, the one page article titled When Men Could Speak. A look into how the art of speech has fallen to a new low. Using quotes from Dubya and then picking them apart using words like, dependant clause, abstract noun-and-verb agreement, past-participial adjective and then I wanted to shove a pencil in my ear. |
|
After that I could take no more. I began picking apart the articles I read, as they failed to hold my interest. I tried to read the article on Robbie but there where more pictures with him all wet and it just made me feel ashamed. I'm wondered if he knew he was doing a photo shot for a Men's magazine.
I then thumbed around an looked at the fashion pages. That was very messy. Sweatshirts with blazers, and jeans, some of the guys looked like they just walked out of a head shop, but with $3,789.89 worth of clothes on. Everything had denim or a blazer but mostly both. Some of them were wearing like two jackets, I thought summer was like two weeks away. There was also a lot of pretty pink, and pastel yellow v-neck sweaters. Proof that the fact that it cost a lot of money doesn't mean a thing.
Overall I didn't really like it much. The articles were short, and left me wanting a lot more. Some of the content was trivial such as the half page on relationship that covered how to brake up with your girlfriend. I think I could have gotten more out of my twelve year old brother (for the record, he is one of the most sapient twelve year olds I know). I didn't really feel like these people actually talked to who they were interviewing. As if they had read another interview and then summarized it. One thing that there was enough of, the references to Cary Grant being the icon for the perfect man. I counted three, all in different articles.
I think if you were to find DETAILS in an episode of Will & Grace, Jack would be praising the short articles as the don't require him to read for very long. As a mater of fact, that is the only praise that I can give it as well, not to compare my self with Jack.
