Having been in the military for sometime, almost five years, I have seem a
variety of leadership techniques, and styles. Each variation was without
fault. Well that is if you asked whom ever in charge at the time. They could
do no wrong, everything they said was gold. If you were not following them
around with a pen and paper writing down everything that spilled from there
mouth, you were missing out on some of the most profound wisdom ever to
grace the ears of mankind.
Most of these persons attended college over the course of a fifteen year military career. Not that there is anything wrong with continuing ones education while working fulltime. However taking one class at a time for 28 semesters, 6 summer sessions and taking 16 CLEP test (a test that allows you college credit for what you were able to teach yourself from the CLEP study guide for which ever test you were going to take) to peace together a bachelors from 8 Universities, 7 of which were online, hardly qualifies anyone for anything useful. Yet I see day after day under qualified individuals with Bagus Fullofhotairus. I'm sure you can think of a few that suffer from this condition as you are reading this. These people have filled my military career with pride and joy for the last 4 years 6 months 26 days 21 hours and 53 minuets and I'd like to share with you some of the leadership qualities the military has taught me, and will someday make me a valuable part of some big firm, and society, that is if Operation Homedaddy isn't a success.

Keep your staff on their toes by changing your mind about everything often. Remember, no policy should remain in affect for more than a week. The last thing you need is a staff in a comfortable productive routine. Keep their minds sharp by keeping them jumping though hoops at your every whim. Be sure to correct those that refuse to adapt with swift punishment, but not without warning. Verbal warning should come in the form of screams that can be herd from the four corners of the office building, not only does this get your point across in an effective manner, but it also serves as a reminder to other negligent staff members that your are not a force to be reckoned with. This is also a good way to relive stress that may have built up though out the day. Insure that you find at least one individual to correct a day to maintain a healthy stress level. |
One of the easiest ways to get involved with your subordinates, is to see them in their work environment. Nothing says you care like stepping out of your air conditioned office, asking someone where your staff works, and find your way to asking them dumb questions, and trying to relate with pointless small talk. While your there make sure to point out anything wrong, or that you don't like. Your keen powers of observation are always welcome. After all, you didn't get to where you were by not following the rules.

Have staff members projects clearly outlined, and explain every detail so
that there is no mistake to what it is that you expect. While the project it
in work rethink the requirements of the project. Once the project is
finished inform your staff of the new requirements, and give then half the
time to redo the entire task. This provides your staff members with good,
"High stress work environment" experience. Now they will be able to perform
when it really counts.
Finaly ensure that your micromanage everything. After all the best way to do anything is your way. Nothing will get done right if you're not there making sure of it personally. After all, you didn't make it to where you are today by being wrong. |
